BBJ Entry 002: The Call

When I was young, I had the same flights of fancy as any other kid about what I wanted to be when I grew up. From Jedi master to rock star to New York Times Bestseller, my dreams of being heroic, imaginative, and entertaining ran the gamut.

As I matured and became a man, I couldn’t find the right vocational fit. After a string of unrelated jobs, I found my way into business writing. I was grateful for good jobs with great people at interesting companies, but they were just jobs. They paid the bills, but the work never really made me come alive. I was frustrated and angry, and nothing called to me. I felt like I was running full speed along a path that was going nowhere, except to the end of a life with no purpose.

I love great writing and great speaking, great communication that connects minds and hearts across the room and across the planet and across time. I love the way it ebbs and flows, carrying us away on a virtual journey and then gently setting us back down again, perhaps in the same place we started, but never as the same people. We come back feeling more, or thinking differently, or seeing the world anew, in some way, for the better.
